The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) stands as a pinnacle in the realm of forensic science, boasting expertise across over 30 distinct disciplines. With a commitment to innovation and customer-centric services, NFI plays a pivotal role in bolstering the rule of law, both domestically and internationally. Through continuous investment in education and innovation, NFI remains at the forefront of forensic research, ensuring rapid adaptation to evolving social, technological, and scientific landscapes within the industry.
Central to NFI’s operations is the Division of Biological Traces, tasked with processing between 50,000 to 70,000 DNA samples annually. These samples, crucial for criminal investigations, are exceptionally sensitive to cross-contamination and must be stored for up to 80 years in compliance with Dutch law. DNA profiling, a cornerstone technique in forensic science, aids in individual identification, particularly in criminal cases. NFI’s workflow typically involves analyzing reference samples, uploading DNA profiles to the national database, and comparing crime scene traces with reference profiles to identify potential matches.
To meet the demands of its operational scale and evolving requirements, NFI sought to enhance its laboratory processes. Originally utilizing BiOS by Hamilton Storage for automated workflow, NFI required higher throughput capacity and additional storage at +4°C. BiOS, a large-capacity -80°C automated sample storage and retrieval system, serves as a long-term archive for DNA extracted from crime scene evidence. Its modular design accommodates a wide range of tube types, offering flexibility and scalability.

However, NFI also faced the challenge of storing DNA extracts and cards securely while ensuring accessibility and minimizing contamination risks. The solution came in the form of a customized Verso M3 system, capable of storing 150,000 DNA Cards, 80,000 96-format 0.7 mL tubes, and 1,600 AutoLys tubes at +4°C. Verso, an automated sample storage system, offers quick processing speeds and robust security features, aligning with NFI’s stringent requirements.
NFI’s workflow begins with collecting trace samples in AutoLys tubes, facilitating sample lysis and ensuring traceability through barcoding. These samples are then transferred to Verso for DNA extraction, where they are stored temporarily until processing authorization is obtained. Reference DNA samples, collected on cards, undergo a similar process, with Verso managing their storage until they are ready for profiling.
Once authorized, Verso retrieves the DNA cards for profiling, ensuring compliance with NFI’s business rules. Crime scene samples undergo DNA extraction in AutoLys tubes, with a portion stored temporarily in Verso for subsequent analysis. Successful profiles are archived in BiOS, while repeats are managed through Verso’s flexible storage capabilities.

The integration of Verso into NFI’s workflow streamlines DNA profiling processes, merging storage and retrieval seamlessly. Verso’s software, INSTINCT S, supports NFI’s business rules, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination and ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Furthermore, Verso’s capability to handle Copan NUCLEIC-CARDS showcases its adaptability to NFI’s specific needs.
In essence, the partnership between NFI and Hamilton Storage exemplifies the potential of automated sample management in forensic applications. By leveraging innovative technologies like BiOS and Verso, NFI optimizes its operational efficiency while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and security. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of tailored solutions in addressing the complex demands of forensic science.
